One instructor, since 2013
Life Safety Driving School has been teaching Ventura County families since 2013. It is deliberately small: the same instructor takes a student from the first lesson to the drive test.
That continuity is the point. An instructor who has seen every one of a student's lessons knows whether the hesitation at a left turn is nerves or a gap in the training, and can do something about it before test day.

How we teach
Lessons run on the roads students are actually tested on, not on quiet streets chosen to make the hour feel easy. Students who train on the merges and intersections that give new drivers trouble are the ones who are calm when the examiner asks for them.
Where we teach
Pickup and drop-off across Ventura County and nearby Los Angeles County communities, from home, school or work. Most students test at the Thousand Oaks DMV, and lessons are planned around the office you are booked at.
Licensed and checked
California licenses driving schools individually, and the license is public. Ours is E4617, currently active. You can look it up yourself on the DMV’s Occupational License Lookup before you book with us or with anyone else.
What the six hours cover
California asks for six hours of professional behind-the-wheel training before a driver under 18 can take the drive test. We teach it as three two-hour lessons, and they build on each other rather than repeating.
Lesson 1: the controls and the quiet streets
Seating, mirrors, steering, smooth starts and stops, and the residential grid. The aim is that nothing in the car is a surprise any more.
Lesson 2: real traffic
Multi-lane roads, lane changes, protected and unprotected left turns, and the intersections local students actually get marked down on.
Lesson 3: the test, and beyond it
The roads around the field office you are booked at, parking, and the maneuvers examiners ask for. Freeway, canyon and tunnel work can be added if you want it.
How he teaches
The rules that have not changed since 2013
No yelling, no cursing
His own standing rule, in his own words: strictly no cursing and no yelling by the instructor, for any reason. A nervous student who is shouted at learns to dread the car, not to drive it.
A non-smoking car, always
The instructor does not smoke and the car is not smoked in. For a two-hour lesson with the windows up in August, that is not a small thing.
Manual transmission taught too
Stick shift training is available, which almost no local school still offers. Useful if the family car is manual, or if you want to drive one abroad.
Parents are told the truth
Parents hear what their child is actually struggling with, not a reassurance. Most parents never meet a driving school in person, so the report after the lesson is the only thing they have to go on.
You pay per lesson
No paying for six hours in advance and waiting months to use it. You pay for the lesson you are taking, and nothing is due until the second one.
One student in the car
Training is private, one student at a time. Nobody sits in the back waiting their turn, and nothing is taught to two people at different levels at once. His own words for it: private training for one student at a time.
Trusted by people who check first
Families in law enforcement, the courts, the fire service, medicine and engineering have handed this school their teenagers. Several arrived by word of mouth from another parent who had already been through it.
Before you book anywhere
How to check a California driving school
Most families never visit a driving school before booking one. They see an instructor, a car and a price, and they decide. These are the questions worth asking first, and they apply to every school in the state, this one included.
- Compare tuition, and ask whether there are additional fees or charges on top of it
- Ask whether the vehicle is insured and mechanically safe, which Vehicle Code 11103 and 11109 require
- Ask to see the curriculum, not just a number of hours
- Check the instructor is DMV licensed, and look the school up on the public license register
- Ask whether the instructor is covered by workers compensation
- Ask whether you can use the same car for the drive test
What California law already requires
California Vehicle Code 11103
A driving school shall maintain bodily injury and property damage liability insurance on the vehicles used for instruction, covering the school, the instructor and the student.
California Vehicle Code 11109
Every licensed driving school shall maintain all vehicles used in driver training in safe mechanical condition at all times.
California Labor Code 3700
An employer shall secure the payment of workers compensation for its employees. A driving school that treats its instructor as an employee is covered by this.
