Does my teenager need driver education before getting a permit?
Yes. In California anyone applying for a provisional permit before turning 18 has to complete an approved driver education course first. The DMV will not issue the permit without the completion certificate. The classroom portion can be done online; the behind-the-wheel portion is the six hours of professional training you book with us.
How many behind-the-wheel hours does California require?
Six hours with a licensed driving school for drivers under 18. We teach it as three two-hour lessons. Adults are not required to take any professional training, though many book a lesson or two before the drive test.
Do I have to pay for all six hours up front?
No. You pay as you take each lesson. Some schools hold the full amount for months before you have used it, and we have never worked that way.
Can I start with a single lesson?
Yes. Plenty of students take one hour first to see how it goes, then decide. That applies to adults getting back behind the wheel as much as to teens.
Do you pick students up?
Yes, pickup and drop-off within our service area is included. Home, school or work all work. Please have the student ready about twenty minutes ahead so the lesson starts on time.
Can I use your car for the DMV drive test?
Yes. Students train in the same vehicle they can use for the test, which removes one of the larger variables on test day. The car is maintained, insured, and fitted with an instructor brake.
Which DMV office will my drive test be at?
Most Ventura County students test at the Thousand Oaks office. Students in the eastern part of our area sometimes test in Winnetka. We will practice around whichever office you are booked at.
What do I need to bring to the first lesson?
The permit itself. The instructor cannot legally start a lesson without it in hand, so check it has arrived before the first booking.
How old does my child have to be to start driver education?
Driver education can be started at 15. The provisional permit itself comes at 15 and a half, and only once the driver education course is finished. Starting the course a few months before the birthday is common, so the permit application is ready the day they become eligible.
How many hours of practice do we need to log before the drive test?
California asks for 50 hours of supervised practice before a driver under 18 can take the drive test, and 10 of those 50 must be at night. A parent or guardian signs to confirm it. That is separate from, and on top of, the six professional hours. Keep the log as you go rather than reconstructing it later, because the DMV asks for it at the appointment.
What restrictions apply once my teenager passes?
For the first 12 months a provisional license holder may not drive between 11pm and 5am, and may not carry passengers under 20 unless a licensed driver aged 25 or older is in the car. There are narrow exemptions, for example for medical or school reasons with a signed note. We cover what these mean in practice during the third lesson, because they catch families out in the first month.
What happens if the drive test is failed?
It can be retaken. The DMV allows three attempts on one application, and there is a waiting period of about two weeks between attempts, with a fee for each retest. A failed test is not unusual and it is not the end of anything. If it happens, the most useful thing is to book a lesson and work on the specific reasons the examiner marked, because they are almost always two or three repeatable things.
What happens if the written test is failed?
Same shape: three attempts on one application, then a new application and fee. If you are under 18 the DMV asks you to wait seven days before retaking a failed knowledge test, not counting the day you failed it. The written test is knowledge, not driving, so the fix is the material rather than time behind the wheel.
Is more than one student in the car during a lesson?
No. Lessons are one student at a time. Two students in a car means half the time behind the wheel for the same money, and an audience for a nervous beginner.
What should we bring to the DMV for the drive test?
The permit, the completion certificates for driver education and behind-the-wheel training, the signed practice log, and proof that the vehicle is registered and insured. If the test is in our car, that last part is handled. Book the appointment well ahead: waits of a few weeks are normal at the busier field offices.
How do I contact the DMV directly?
dmv.ca.gov handles appointments, forms and the current fees, and there is a public phone line during business hours. Rules and fees do change, so treat the DMV as the authority on anything here and this page as a guide to what to ask about.
