Driving Lessons for Adults and International License Holders
You may have driven for twenty years somewhere else. California will still ask you to take its own drive test, and it is a particular test with particular habits behind it.
Adults are not required to take driver education in California. Over 18, you can book the written test and the drive test directly. What adults do need, and what almost no course is built for, is a short, targeted correction of the handful of habits that will fail a California examiner.
Drivers with a license from another country
Years of experience behind the wheel, and a California drive test that does not care about any of it.
California does not recognize a foreign driver license for residents. However long you have driven elsewhere, you take the same written test and the same drive test as a sixteen-year-old, in a state whose road markings, right-of-way conventions and freeway merges are probably not the ones you learned on.
That is a different teaching job from a first-time teenager, and it is the one most driving schools handle worst. An experienced driver does not need to be taught how to steer. They need to know which of their habits will fail a California examiner, and there are usually only a handful.

- Lane discipline and the center turn lane, which many countries do not have

Adults returning to driving
A license you have not used in years, or confidence that did not survive a bad experience.
Plenty of adults hold a license and avoid driving. Some never drove after passing. Some stopped after a collision. Some moved from a city where they never needed a car to a county where they do.
There is no minimum here. One hour is a legitimate booking, and for an adult who mainly needs to prove to themselves that they can still do it, one hour is often the right one.

Teens and their parents
The six hours California requires, taught around a bell schedule.
California requires six hours of professional behind-the-wheel training before a driver under 18 can take the drive test. That is the legal minimum, not a recommendation, and it is separate from the classroom course.
Parents are part of this rather than spectators to it. The original school built its reputation on telling parents what their child was actually struggling with, and on a rule that has not changed: no yelling and no cursing at a student, for any reason.

Licenses from nine countries, and counting
Adults who have trained here arrived holding licenses from India, China, Hong Kong, England, Israel, the Philippines, Mexico, Sri Lanka and Russia. Most were here on a work visa and needed a California license quickly, without sitting through a course written for teenagers.
They worked in information technology, computer engineering, software development, research science, medicine, pharmacy, accountancy, nursing, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, chemistry and doctoral research. The lesson is the same either way. What changes is the pace, which is faster, and the focus, which is narrower.
Students have also come from CSU Northridge, California Lutheran University, CSU Channel Islands, Moorpark College, Oxnard College and Ventura College, where a license is usually the difference between one commute and three buses.

There is no package to commit to. One hour is a normal booking, and for an experienced driver it is often enough to find out whether anything actually needs fixing before the test.
