What this course covers, and what it does not

  • This is the theory portion of Entry-Level Driver Training. It is delivered online and completed at your own pace.
  • You will also need behind-the-wheel training from a separate provider. Life Safety Driving School does not provide CDL behind-the-wheel instruction.
  • The training provider for this course is GetDriversEd, not Life Safety Driving School.

Federal rules require that ELDT training come from a provider listed on the FMCSA Training Provider Registry. You can look up any provider on the registry before you buy.

Who this is for

CDL holders adding a hazardous materials (H) endorsement.

Hazmat is theory-only under the rule

The hazmat endorsement is unusual: the Entry-Level Driver Training requirement for it is theory instruction only. There is no behind-the-wheel component specified for the endorsement itself.

That does not mean the endorsement is quick. Alongside the training you will need a TSA security threat assessment, which involves fingerprinting and a background check, and that process takes its own time.

What else the endorsement requires

After completing the training you take the hazmat knowledge test at the DMV. The TSA assessment runs separately and has to be cleared before the endorsement is issued. Start it early; it is usually the long pole.

What the course covers

  • Hazard classes and the placarding tables
  • Shipping papers, markings and labelling
  • Loading, unloading and segregation rules
  • Emergency response and incident reporting
  • Security planning and en-route security requirements

Questions about this course

Is there a behind-the-wheel requirement for hazmat?

No. The hazardous materials endorsement is theory-only under the Entry-Level Driver Training rule. You will still need to pass the DMV knowledge test and clear a TSA security threat assessment.
